Toowoomba is one of Australia’s oldest cities and the largest urban centre in the Darling Downs. The city is situated on the edge of a plateau which rises 355 metres above sea level and has an average elevation of 944 metres. It has many attractions for tourists including museums, parks, wildlife sanctuaries and unique architecture. Here are some of Toowoomba’s tourist spots:
The Range
The Range is a shopping centre in Toowoomba that is popular with both tourists and locals. It has everything you could want from a shopping mall, including:
- A wide range of shops and restaurants
- Activities for children, like an indoor playground and cinema
The Range is located on the corner of Margaret Street and Ruthven Street, so it’s easy to find if you’re staying at one of our hotels nearby.
Boggo Road Gaol Museum
Boggo Road Gaol was the most notorious prison in Queensland, and it’s still an ominous place to visit. The gaol was built in 1864, with many people being imprisoned there during its lifetime.
The museum tells the history of this infamous prison, as well as life inside it and what it took to be incarcerated there. You can even see where some famous criminals were held! It’s also worth noting that there are tours available if you want some extra insight into what life was like for those who were locked up here–or just want some good stories about how people escaped from their cells (hint: sometimes by tunneling out).
Empire Theatre
The Empire Theatre is located in Toowoomba’s CBD, and was originally built as an Opera House in 1897. It has been used as a cinema since 1910, and the building has been listed on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992.
The theatre is home to one of Australia’s most famous movie posters: “Come Out Fighting”, which was painted by artist Norman Lindsay in 1915 and depicts soldiers fighting against German soldiers during World War I. The poster was originally displayed outside the theatre before being moved inside after World War II ended; there are plans underway to move it back outside again soon!
There are also many other historic items found throughout this site including some old photos from when it first opened its doors over 100 years ago! You can see these pieces along with many others during your visit here today 🙂
Queens Park
